EDOUARD CHIMOT ( 1880 - 1959 ) Best known in recent times for his rather un-politically correct use of the female nude to illustrate various works of so-called erotic literature ( Lady Chatterley - Fanny Hill etc. ) it is well to remember that in the early C20 Chimot was highly acclaimed for his portraits and representations of women of both high and low society. He was highly sought-after as a book illustrator who was able to evoke the character of the age between the two World Wars, and was responsible for sumptuous, exotic, and of course subtly erotic, paintings and drawings in editions of works of major poets such as Baudelaire and Verlaine, or of well regarded authors such as André Maurois, Gustave Flaubert, Colette. In 1923 Chimot became artistic director at the prestigious art publishing company of Devambez, where he supervised the publication of books with illustrations by a number of eminent artists. Much has been written on Chimot, his art and his career, but for a potted version ( in French ) try Wikipédia https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%89douard_Chimot |
