TAVY NOTTON (1914-1977)

Born in Bangkok in 1914, Jean-Baptiste Tavy Notton, whose father, Camille, was in the diplomatic service in Thailand, was initially schooled at the Convent College in Bangkok, but was soon transferred to the Lycée Hoche in Versailles. Surprisingly little is documented about Notton's professional career or his training as an artist, but he was a master in the art of wood engraving, with his depiction of wildlife and the natural world showing considerable talent. Returning from a spell in Greece as a young man he was 'found' by Pierre de Tartas and subsequently illustrated several lavish limited edition works.
